       What is Toastmasters?

Toast 是「舉杯祝賀」,Master 是「主人」,所以可將Toastmaster 解釋為「會議主持人」。

Toastmasters International was founded in October, 1924, Santa Ana, California, U.S.A. by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley.  The club mission is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

In Taiwan, the first Toastmasters Club (Taipei Toastmasters Club) was established in 1958 in Taipei.  Over the years, we have more than 125 clubs island-wide.  The majority of the clubs are English clubs, with a few Taiwanese, Japanese and Mandarin clubs.

How does Toastmasters work?

A Toastmasters club is a "learning-by-doing" workshop in which men and women have their skills in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere.

Upon joining Toastmasters Club,  members progress through a well organized educational program which divided into two tracks- a communication track and a leadership track.

The core of the communication track contains 10 speech projects. They are

  • C1: The Ice Breaker

  • C2: Organize Your speech

  • C3: Get to the Point

  • C4: How to Say It

  • C5: Your Body Speaks

  • C6: Vocal Variety

  • C7: Research Your Topic

  • C8: Get Comfortable with Visual Aids

  • C9: Persuade with Power

  • C10: Inspire Your Audience

The Leadership track helps members learn and practice leadership skills. It also has 10 projects.  They are

  • P1: Listening and Leadership

  • P2: Critical Thinking

  • P3: Giving Feedback

  • P4: Time Management

  • P5: Planning and Implementation

  • P6: Organizing and Delegating

  • P7: Developing Your Facilitation Skills

  • P8: Motivating People

  • P9: Mentoring

  • P10: Team Building
