HOW TO MAKE AN EVALUATION   by Emily Liu

( An Evaluation is the act of giving feedback )

  1. PREPARATION:

--Read the speech project .

--Talk with the speaker.

  2. EVALUATION:

--Pay attention and listen carefully.

--Make notes ~ content and delivery .

  3. DELIVERY:

--Be confident and sincere .

--Give only your opinion , you are not speaking on behalf of the audience .

--Avoid impersonal statement , don’t say “ they say “, “one must “ , “ the audience think “ .

--Give your personal opinions in a friendly , direct , non-threatening manner .

--Look directly at the speaker as you give your presentation . 

  4. COMMENT:

--Bear in mind the sandwich technique or the 3 k rules . You should start off with a kiss then a kick and finally followed by another kiss .

--Comment on the type of the speech : ~inspirational ? informative ? technical ? motivational ? entertaining ? educational ? humorous ? etc…….

--Comment on the good delivery of the speaker: ~body language , eye contact , gestures , postures , vocal variety , voice volume , facial expressions, tone of the voice , rate of the speech , visual aids, props .

--Comment on the content: ~ What do you like the most of the whole speech ? Is it well-organized ? Is it logical to understand ? Which part of the content leaves the impression ?

--Sum up your evaluation by stating the value of this speech : ~What did the speaker want us to take home from the speech ? Add your own words to make it as personal opinion . Echo any “ words of wisdom “ used in the speech if you have benefited from it . Try to add your own words of wisdom to echo and to conclude the evaluation .

Content :

1.     Introduction----get attention ? gives needed information ? makes purpose clear ?

2.     Body----main points clearly stated ? well-structured ? logically sound ? transitions effective ? enough sources or evidence ?

3.     Conclusion----emphasize main points ? related to the introduction ? provides a note of finality ? creative ? summary of ideas ? ends with the audience interest high ? 

Delivery :

1.     Style----natural ? project good will ?

2.     Body----eye contact adequate ? posture acceptable ? movement appropriate ? gestures effective ? use visual aids without being awkward ?

3.     Voice----distinct ? vocal variety adequate ? rate volume ? pitch fluency ? vocalized pauses avoided ?

QESTIONS :

  1.         Please write down your evaluation and comment about the speech you havejust seen , giving three positive comments and another three comment for improvement .

  2.         If you were the speaker , what would you expect to receive from your evaluator ?

  3.         If you only receive positive or negative comment from your evaluator , would you think you get the feedback ?

  4.         How do you prepare your evaluation ?
